What are Electroluminescent Lamps?
Electroluminescent (EL) lamps are based on ultra-thin phosphor layers which glow when exposed to electrical current.  This produces soft, even illumination without glare.  EL lamps generate no heat under normal operating conditions, have extremely low power draw, are virtually shock proof and are not subject to catastrophic failure.  Because EL lamps do not require a gas field to charge (like fluorescent bulbs), they do not contain hazardous mercury vapor.  All these characteristics make EL lamps ideal for gel imaging and analysis.
